Recently, our office updated all of our Macs to the latest OS, Catalina. We felt like we vetted it out responsibly. We saw there were a few items here and there (most-notable at the time were some plug-ins related to PhotoShop)… but, overall, we felt, “yeah, sure, why not?”

Unlike other Mac OS upgrades that we performed in the past on one or two machines, tested it out, and IMMEDIATELY rolled back to the previous OS version because of issues – the testing of Catalina was surprisingly easy and smooth so we strongly and courageously marched onward with the roll out.

It wasn’t until I (Jay) was holding my first Chime meeting after the rollout that a cold chill went down my back. My Chime screen sharing wasn’t working.

I… use… Chime… for ALL my client meetings. I love Chime. I can’t sing the praises of Chime enough. As a small business owner, it came bundled with our Vonage telephony system and it’s great. It’s affordable, it’s great quality in terms of meetings, has all the bells and whistles I need…

And now it wasn’t working.

And nobody gave a shit.

When I say that, I mean, nobody in my company gave a shit. Don’t get me wrong, they feigned giving a shit in a polite and just-shy-of-convincing way. But it didn’t impact them as much as it did me (meaning, pretty much not at all) and it was obvious there was nothing that could be done about it. It was a Chime/Catalina compatibility issue.

I tell everyone at TimeHoodie that we don’t dictate style. We focus on goals; and try to procure a culture at TimeHoodie that is goal-oriented, detail oriented, and delivers results. If anyone at TimeHoodie wants to internally use Google Hangouts or Skype or WHATEVER – I’m fine with that. And – as a result – most don’t use Chime. Even if they have external meetings with clients, they will usually plug into whatever the client uses (like Zoom, join.me, GoToMeeting, or whatever).

If they can’t use Chime, they’ll jump over to something else and not miss a beat.

I scoured message boards, Google searches, Chime knowledge base and tech support looking for answers. But it was such a new issue, there wasn’t any support. Just discussions about how Catalina moved to 64-bit vs 32-bit and yada, yada – nothing that helped me.

The Amazon Chime / Mac Catalina Compatibility Issue: When you go to screen share on Chime it throws an error, “You need to allow screen recording. Go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Screen Recording and allow Chime to share your screen.”

The problem? Following the instructions leads you to this:

This is where Chime should be a choice to select. And as you can see, it’s not.

And I couldn’t find any way to talk to a human at Chime about this. So, I called Vonage… and eventually they got me in contact with somebody that wanted to SELL me Chime… (Yep.)

Then I remembered, Chime asks EVERY time you end a meeting – “how did it go?”

I occasionally, hit the thumbs up and otherwise hit the X and keep moving. But I remembered… there was a little chat icon dude that was there as well.

The answer was in front of me all along!

I hit the chat icon dude:

YES! This is what I needed!

Proceededing to calmly and politely write feedback in hopes that Chime would address my issue was the perfect solution! Instead of doing that, though, I proceeded to rant and spit fire and basically (looking back on it now) wrote what was an embarrassing over-reaction to my frustration at the time…

But that did not deter my future-hero, Beth.

Keep in mind, I wrote this on a Friday. I got an email Monday morning from Beth. She had got my message and sent me the following.

A special build.

Beth sent me a pre-release, special build so I could hold my meetings on Monday.

Because of Beth, the ONLY meeting I ever had to scramble and handle using join.me was the one meeting when I found out about the issue.

I had no less than 8 meetings scheduled that week that needed Chime and 2 were on that exact Monday.

I downloaded my special package, installed, and got this:

There you are… my little amigo, Chime. Where you’re supposed to be.

Thank you, Beth. Thank you for caring, thank you for acting, and thank you for putting up with a poorly-worded and grammatically incorrect email from a frustrated customer.

In the words of Ren Höek, “you’re one of the good ones.”

It’s also handy to get an idea of what sort of budget you would need if you wanted to redesign it.

Dear Diary,

MailChimp and I went to counseling again. This is like the 3rd time in the past few months. He showed up late and I could smell beer on his breath.

He acts like nothing is wrong, but I know he’s lying.

“She and I work together,” he said today in counseling, “And now she wants all of the info on all of my clients. All of MY clients. Everything now, everything to come, and everything dating back to when we first started working together.”

Which is only partly true, Diary. I want all of his info on all of his clients and if he has any info from other people besides myself that talk to his client, I want that, too. That’s it. Which, I believe to be highly reasonable.

Also, I suspect he’s cheating on me.

I found this text message on his phone, “Can’t wait to launch shoppable landing pages with you…” He signed it with an eggplant emoji. SMH. And get this, Diary, the Contact Name was, “Low Battery” which is B.S. because I know through Karen that means he’s speaking with someone he doesn’t want me to know about.

Don’t judge me, Diary, but I looked through his browser history and found www.squarup.com. I bet he’s talking to that fake b**ch, Square. ARRRGGHHH!! SQUARE! God, I hate her…

I know he repeatedly said, over and over, that we’re not “exclusive” and he was very public about the other girls he was dating… but, c’mon, you know… I know… it’s like, you know, yes… I’m dating other guys, too… but you know… like, I KNOW… it was different with us. He knows it, too.

In any event, it’s final. I’m moving on. In fact, I’ve been seeing his friend ShopSync on the side. (Sort of like when Gwyneth Paltrow started dating Ross from “Friends” so that she could keep tabs on Brad Pitt while he dated Jennifer Aniston…)

Oh well, I have a pint of “Half Baked” Ben & Jerry’s, “The Notebook” queued up on Amazon, a box of tissues, and all night with Gloria Gaynor on my Spotify playlist. I will survive, Diary. I will survive.

XXOO,

Shopify

P.S. TimeHoodie’s recommendation for MailChimp replacement is ShopSync: https://apps.shopify.com/shopsync-2 – it’s free and the best way for a seamless transition. You still get everything you need and maintain a MailChimp integration through ShopSync (instead of directly through MailChimp’s app)

MailChimp’s own recommended alternatives that allow you to keep using MailChimp indirectly through a 3rd party: https://mailchimp.com/help/shopify-workarounds/

Shopify’s bitter-for-being-jilted list of other lovers to replace MailChimp: https://community.shopify.com/c/Shopify-Apps/Mailchimp-alternatives-and-integration-apps/td-p/500290

He Said – MailChimp’s Open Letter about the breakup: https://mailchimp.com/shopify-statement/

She Said – Shopify’s icy, official statement on the breakup:

“On May 12th the Mailchimp app will stop working. We know that you depend on email marketing to reach your customers, and we want to make this transition as easy as possible for you. We recommend choosing a new email marketing solution, and there are several options available that make the process quick and easy with migration support and special offers for Shopify merchants. Our team is here to offer 1-on-1 support to help you understand your available options.”

Hey, we could use a little help over here!

To get straight to the point, we’re actively looking for junior-level Marketers and Designers. Like, right-out-of-school type junior. We’ll even listen to your opinion on which JoJo character has the best stand ability.

We also have ad hoc work for cool programmers with moderate-to-deep level experience. Working remote isn’t an issue for us. Ideal candidates are available for happy hour at Green Russell on an as-needed basis. (Unless you’re out of state… then that’s on you. Maybe we’ll send an occasional Voodoo Donut gift-package).

I’m Afraid You’re An Invasive Species Now…

In a recent discussion over dinner with a client, the inevitable topic came up – unchecked, unbridled and rampant change in our culture because of the internet.

When this particular topic comes up, it can appear in many forms – texting while driving, extreme divisiveness, trolling, livestreaming acts of violence, pervasiveness of pornography, disseminating private information, foreign and domestic propaganda through social media, etc.

But this time it came up “in general.” Meaning, there wasn’t a catalyst of, “too many people are texting and driving nowadays, yada, yada, yada…” it came up all at once. The Internet in general was being placed on the table of conversation as being a Pandora’s box – from which, the released contents have an overwhelmingly negative influence on cultural change.

Wow. And I just came for the Margaritas and nachos. So, this was a lot to take in…

There it was, though… the undeniable reality that the fruits of the internet like rapid advancements in collaboration, research, medicine, nanotechnology, Artificial Intelligence, self-driving cars… were coming in tandem with the amplification of very real and very dark human issues like addiction, bullying, gluttony, rage…

The knee-jerk reaction is to ask, “What can be done about it?”

I mean, we can ask the Internet politely to leave. Or at the very least ask it to clean up its act, but I’m pretty sure that’s not going to go anywhere.

The immediate focus on solving this problem became laws, regulations, demonizing the technology, etc. Which we batted around for a while until one of our clients said, “the people.” And went on to explain that it’s not these tools and apps and websites that are the issue. It’s the people.

And darn it, that client was right…

Here we have all of this advancement and access to things that never existed before. And just like Prometheus’s gift of fire to mankind, the Internet can be used for good and evil alike – but it’s a whole new evil we were and, in many ways, still are unprepared for…

It’s like Lord of the Flies. As a society we’ve been dumped on a new island. Free of rules and regulations. Free from social norms. Free from perceived constraints. But most of all, freedom from accountability. Freedom of acting from the shadows to flame, to divide, to bully, to whatever…

So far, nothing really new there in terms of that perspective, but the new realization is that this freedom seems to have activated an “invasive species” of “awakened” personality types.

Like Manchurian Candidates, many in society and possibly even you, have become triggered and activated a deep, dark personality type within yourself:

The Didjagima Tribe Member – as in, immediately following up a communication with a secondary form of communication different from the first and adding no value…

Example – calling someone immediately after you text them and saying, “Did-ya-get-my… text?”

Neros – any politician, corporate leader, or team leader that engages more focus to tweets, online reviews (Glass Door, Yelp, Google, Facebook, etc.), and basically personal-image-related items out of vanity, instead of addressing legitimate, substantive issues with products, services, policies, etc.

Examples –

Social Media Expert to CEO: you have a 2-3 recurring themes in your bad Glass Door reviews, “Lack of support from upper-management,” “Hate providing our clients with poor customer service,” and “CEO is vain to a fault;”

CEO: How can we push these reviews down on the results page so people can’t see them?

SME: Well, it would seem like there is enough direction provided here to work on the actual issues. It will take time, but the good reviews will replace the bad. We can start right now and in a few months…

CEO: Yeah, yeah, we can do that later, but what I mean is like can we get a team from India to write good reviews? Like, “Upper-management has really taken company to the next level.”

SME: Or, like, “Best CEO I’ve ever worked for…”

CEO: Well, yeah, sure heheh… but can we do the India thing?

Trolls – most people recognize this one, but it is a person that intentionally flames and starts fights with people online for the purpose of amusement or self-gain. They usually focus on trying to get an emotional response out of someone and will go to great lengths to lie, exaggerate, and fabricate if necessary as well as bring in completely unrelated topics to illicit a response.

Fun Fact: Trolls are largely to thank for what has become known as Godwin’s law or Reductio ad Hitlerum which is essentially, “the longer a discussion grows, the likelihood increases that a person attempts to invalidate someone else’s position by comparing their views to Hitler.”

Campers – This subset of trolls is also activated by the freedom of being able to set people against each other on message boards or spread discord and/or disinformation, but they usually focus on a specific individual, message board, or other narrow communication channel.

Examples – they will consistently show up in a specific politicians twitter feed or they may hang out on pro- or anti- vaccination blogs to attack individual people or ideas – or – they may camp in a specific and narrow (geo-based or community-based) website like Nextdoor and attack all opinions that differ from theirs within their larger, but still local, community.

COSers (pronounced like “poser”) – Comforted by creating their own, custom echo-chambers to surround themselves with only like-minded opinions (which is the equivalent of sticking your fingers in your ears and going “nyah nyah nyah nyah…”), these folks create what they believe to be private “safe” spaces to vent and share both legitimate points and disinformation and usually cannot differentiate between the two. The COS part comes from Get Smarts “Cone Of Silence” where a private space is created and information shared in that space is not meant for anyone not in the COS.

Example – likely any group or forwarded email that you receive from a family member over the age of 65 that references politics, social issues, and stories referencing an generally accepted and respected individual like a doctor, teacher, professor, policemen, social worker recanting an “actual instance” with minorities, millennials, people on welfare, liberals, conservatives, usually occurring in Florida or Texas.

Berks – people that want to believe something so badly that no matter how ridiculous and far-fetched a statement or article is, they take it for truth and circulate it or reference it. Often times these are people reacting to disinformation or clickbait, other times media outlets and newscasters get sucked in because they want the attention and ratings that will follow in association with the information.

Example – Headline: ‘Breatharian’ couple claim to live without food and only survive on ‘the universe’s energy.’… Result: Berks believe it, Berk news outlets spread it. (Oh, yeah, that actually happened. Legitimate news outlets circulated that. Real people believed it.)

The above is just a small, small sample of invasive species that are not aliens from another planet. They are not a physical creature or beast that crossed an imaginary line… They are a newly awoken us:
America 2.0

Florida has been plagued for years with Burmese pythons. They’ve tried everything to reduce or eliminate that population in the everglades. To no avail… So, Florida drew a line in the sand and said, “this is our Home” and hung a “No Burmese Python” sign out front, announcing to the world that Burmese pythons are not welcome… But it was too late, the pythons were already inside the house.

It’s hard enough to fight any physical invasive species at the onset. When you discover them already inside your home, in droves, it’s even harder. Just ask Florida.

How are we supposed to combat an invasive species that isn’t physical. How do you fight that when it’s a manifestation of a personality type. Something that has been activated inside of you? Or someone you love?

I guess you can just ask America 2.0… but I’m sure you’re going to get some hotly divided opinions.

It’s been like a fireworks show lately, from April through June, with pop-ups and interstitials all stopping you from continuing on with a website you use regularly in your bustling daily life saying, “you must agree with this to be able to continue to use this website.”

Most people just click “agree” and know that they are basically at risk of agreeing to a really bad deal in order to keep moving, read what they want to read, buy what they want to buy, and go on with their day.

How good or bad is it? What is being agreed to… we took a moment to try and break down a common example of what we think is a pretty typical and standard agreement.

First of all, why now? What changed with privacy policies that caused all the hub bub, bub?

Well, we can’t blame it all on 9/11, but… no, seriously though, Europe’s new General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR), which has been approved since 2016, finally went into effect on May 25th, 2018. Since almost all major sites operate and do business in Europe, they needed to update their policies. Specifically around how they opt people into their terms – as you know, most sites basically ask for all rights to all your information, wrapped in legalize written by Bob Loblaw, attorney at law. Europe was like, “okay, these terms need to be written in a way that is more straightforward to people can understand what they are getting into…”

The struggle is real.

A study published by Carnegie Mellon University (whose mascot is a flaming brain wielding a sword) put it into very real, geeked-out terms; the study shows that if people in the United States were to actually read the privacy policies that they were served prior to agreeing to them, on average it would take each person over 244 hours in a given year. Reading these policies would collectively cost the people of the United States $365 billion dollars in lost leisure time and productivity at work each year.

Because this Blog is supposed to make it easier to understand terms associated with Privacy Policies, we are putting this overly simplified summary here:

Many of the largest companies with Privacy Policies out there will likely have similar terms and language as the example below. You need to read each to know for sure, but if they have a privacy policy like the one below, here’s an exaggeratedly simple break down:

Companies collect, store, and analyze any and all data that is associated with you

This means emails, instant messages, photos, your browsing history, searches, what you view, what you click, your financial information

Financial information includes brokerage statements, payment information, etc.

Literally anything that they can associate you, by whatever means they get it, they’ll will use it

Information sent to you by any person or company is allowed to be collected, stored, analyzed and sold

Information that can be gathered from anyone that you are connected to is allowed to be collected, stored, analyzed and sold – this includes emails, instant messages, photos, posts, etc.

This information on you is collected directly by the company as well as indirectly, through bought or given means

Even if you are not using their products, services, or websites they are allowed to still track and gather information about you

They are allowed to sell to you, up-sell, cross-sell to you and if another party buys your info that party is allowed to sell to you as well

Before we start, to make it clear, we are not picking on Yahoo. We’re just using them as an example. Why? Because they’re not as polished as Amazon and Google and frequently do things wrong, so why not?

First, we’ll set the stage and dial in how well this “updated” privacy policy adheres to being easy to read and easy to understand. Yes, those are 2 different things. Things can be easy to read, yet at the same time difficult to process. Lobby groups use this tactic frequently when trying to pass things like amendments that require a public vote. Example, “You should never not create an exception to slavery prohibition for criminals, whereof the party shall have been duly convicted.” Yes, exact– wait, what?

We started by running Yahoo’s privacy policy through a readability analyzer. Let’s see how it did…

But what does it mean?

To oversimplify, Yahoo’s Privacy policy is written at around a 7th or 8th grade level in terms of “ability to read it,” but requires approximately a college graduate level of education to understand it. It scores as highly “foggy,” meaning it is difficult as a straight read-through in a single pass.

If you look at just the Dale-Chall, considered by most “in the know” on the subject of readability mapped to understanding to be one of the most accurate methods, a score higher than 9 indicates a very high level of education required to process what is written.

To put it another way, if Yahoo’s Privacy policy was an escape room, unless you’re a college graduate – you’re going to have a very hard time making it out alive.

In June 2017, we announced that Yahoo and AOL had joined to become Oath, a digital and mobile media company and part of Verizon. As a result, Yahoo7 is now a joint venture between Oath and Seven West Media. As part of this collaboration, we’re bringing Oath and Yahoo7 under a single privacy policy that explains what this means for the purposes for which we will collect, and how we will share, use and disclose your personal information in order to bring you the combined services. Some things haven’t changed, such as the control tools we provide to help you manage your experience with us. If you have an existing Yahoo7 or AOL account, you will need to agree to this Privacy Policy. If you have not yet agreed to this Privacy Policy, the legacy Yahoo7 Privacy Policy or legacy Oath Privacy Policy (for AOL) still apply to your account. For Oath or Yahoo7 products or services that are accessed without signing in to an account, this Privacy Policy will apply to those products and services from [25 May 2018]. If you are creating a new account, the terms below apply as of today.

We hope you don’t follow it, but if you do we have a ton of links with little to no descriptions that you need to go through to find even more links. If you do click through, in some instances, 4 levels of navigation to subsequent pages, you will eventually get to a page with a lot of links with little to know explanation… this is actually a red herring because it’s privacy items related to Google. You like Google, right? Well, they aren’t us, you have to log in before you see our settings. If you do log into our stuff – do you have your login info handy? If so, you’ll be able to see that we are taking information across all your synced devices, using all of your search and navigation histories and suppling this to partners that pay for this information to sell you stuff.
Okay, well, you’ve kept reading this for so we might as well tell you; here’s what we collect:

We might recognize you even if you aren’t directly signed in to our products or services; we work with others to track you and get this information.

We track pretty much everything you do: communications with your friends, your posts (obviously), any content you upload or store (we look at that at associate it with you) – this includes photos you’re in with your friends as well as voice inputs by you and emails you send and messaging/texts you send and the attachments in the messages and texts you send…

That stuff we just stated above, yeah, we analyze it – we go through it and parse it out, log it, store it and share it with others; if it wan’t clear enough before, we’re saying it now – this includes incoming content. Anything people send to you, pictures, emails, texts, we take all that info from your friends and store and analyze whatever your friends send. Remember that part where we said we may recognize you even if you aren’t using our services… well, yeah, here’s a good example – say, a friend of yours is someone we’ve been studying based on what they send you. Now let’s say they log in and start using our products – Voilà! We already recognize them. See how easy that was?

We keep track of your pages visited, searches, search terms, page views, and content you view.

We collect your payment and billing information and stuff related to your financial information – we are also allowed access to your financial information through our business partners

We also collect information from your devices (desktop, mobile, tablets, etc.). This is basically the same information we’ve already talked about but just want to make sure if you’re thinking we do it just on your desktop, we do it on everything you connect with (mainly, the biggie is your cell phone).

We track your location.

If we can find a way to get information on you from a business partner or piece of technology we’ll do it. Just be aware.

Again, to be clear this is like anything you do, view, click on, you get the point.

About your friends or basically people that are not you sending you things to you… we get that stuff, store it, use it, etc. Examples:

Like through Facebook

Publicly available info we can get (Fun fact: did you know things like your home address, how much you paid for it, when you bought, etc. is all publicly available information in many states?)

Anyone that will sell it to us

Anyone that will give it to us

SMH. It’s hard to put into words the feelings, you know?

The closest you will get is to watch the series “Deadwood.” The ISPs are Hearst. Ajit Pai is a more spineless and more pathetic version of E.B. Farnum. Commissioner Jarry is our current president of the United States. And John Oliver is Seth Bullock.

If you’ve seen the series, even if you don’t completely understand the ramifications of what we as a society have just lost, you understand the ruthlessness, the pork belly politics, and the underhandedness by which it was taken.

The Needle Returns to the Start of the Song.

When you get to the end, it’s common to look back at the start. Then follow the breadcrumbs along the way to see how it all lines up (with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight).

In this instance, you will see that net neutrality was put into place to protect us, the American people, from a growing oligarchy of companies between 2005 and 2010 that were aggressively maneuvering to control the internet.

Why? What was going on at that time? Who were the major players? Have a seat, let’s walk through this… oh, you’re already sitting, good – let’s get started.

It Was the Best of Times, it was the Worst of Times.

In the mid-to-late ‘90s the internet hit the world like a ton of bricks. Never mind that it existed for quite a while before that, but by the late ‘90s it was commercializing and becoming mainstream. Websites were popping up, people were sharing information, bottom line, “it was cute on steroids.”

But the bandwidth sucked. And it was slow. So, ISPs worked hard to get into everybody’s home with faster bandwidth because more adoption plus more bandwidth means more money.

This rapid ISP growth fueled the dot com boom. Suddenly, any crappy idea with a .com at the end was pure genius. People were dumping billions of dollars into start-ups left and right. It was a real-life version of, “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.”

Some were working out great (like Amazon selling them books) and others looked unstoppable (like our friends Netscape. Who’s Netscape? Google it.)

Then things got weird, quick. Stupid, overfunded companies like Pets.com and Boo.com went down in flames. The halo effect was dragging company values like that of Cisco and Qualcomm down with them. Big companies and big investors watched with great intent to see how this would play out.

Enter the dot bomb era and everyone took a breath and the baby boomer generation said, “see, the internet was just a fad.”

Nevertheless, ISPs persisted.

Bandwidth speeds improved, people got over the fear of putting their credit card info on the internet… um, porn… and other factors continued to stoke the coals, galvanizing the internet’s place in America’s everyday life.

Then around the year 2000, the newspaper industry said, “hey, wait a minute, I thought quicksand was only in 1970 sit coms…” and by 2005, the writing was on the wall, and the entire print industry from newspapers to magazines was in critical condition. In a little more than 5 years, newspaper circulation would be cut in almost half.

That was the sonic boom. The internet was breaking the sound barrier. And it was just getting started.

ISPs were nodding and high-fiving. And began eating each other to grow larger to compete with the AT&Ts and Versions – e.g. Comcast/Xfinity, Charter/Spectrum, etc.

They knew exactly what they had done. They had invented the modern-day equivalent of the Colt 45 during the wild west. “God created men; Sam Colt made them equal.”

Meanwhile, other industries were under attack. The music and film industry were facing piracy issues like never before. Movie theaters were becoming silent as HD TVs and streaming entered homes. Things were being done now that many people thought would never happen. Cars were being bought online. Shoes were being bought online. The real estate industry was under a complete revolution.

For most of this time, ISPs had been like kids running down a hall waving their Colt 45’s shouting, “we’re invincible!” Then between 2005 and 2010 they realized, “wait a minute… this thing is loaded.”

The Rise of Whack-A-Mole

BitTorrent, Netflix, Skype, and similar rapidly-growing companies were causing unforeseen problems. Hey, Skype, you’re letting people know that you can make international calls essentially for free over the internet? What are you doing? Netflix, you killed Blockbuster! BLOCKBUSTER! (Psst… if you were born after 2000, Blockbuster was Starbuck’s before Starbucks).

Yeah, it just got real.

It was like playing whack-a-mole. Comcast blocked BitTorrent altogether, they viewed them as a threat. Verizon, AT&T, and Comcast were throttling Netflix into the grave until Netflix agreed to pay the blood money. This is a not-so-funny chart that show the important of Net Neutrality:

https://technical.ly/philly/2014/05/09/graph-shows-netflix-speeds-changed-comcast-deal-comcast-roundup/

Note this was in 2014. During this time, FCC chairman Tom Wheeler, a former CEO and president of 2 major ISP-related organizations, was one of the people behind drafting a rule that would allow ISPs to put the screws to Disney, Google, and more to charge them up the butt if they wanted to reach their audiences. In May 2014, over 100 internet-focused companies – including Google, Microsoft, eBay, Facebook – said, this is a “grave threat to the internet.”

2015 through January 2017 was the best the internet will have ever been.

Exit Light, Enter Night.

In January 2017, Trump appointed Ajit Pai, former Verizon lawyer, to the FCC in order to take away net neutrality and galvanize an oligarchy of companies to own and control the internet.

Guised as “Restoring Internet Freedom,” Pai issued an NPRM to remove protections in place for American citizens from ISPs throttling bandwidth, overcharging for internet access, censorship, blocking of competitive services, and more.

People voiced their opinions, in droves, to the FCC back in 2014 supporting net neutrality, thanks to John Oliver. Anticipating this happening again in 2017, the dark lord Sith Empire-version of the FCC hid any links on their website this time to head off complaints about what they were doing.

Nevertheless, our hero, John Oliver, persisted. He made a direct link available online to work around this ruse. Which gained major traction immediately after he announced it on his show. “Save net neutrality” feedback was flooding in, yet again, as the voice of the American people. That is until millions of fraudulent submissions using stolen identities started flooding the FCC in support of repealing Net Neutrality.

The New York Attorney General took this fraudulent activity very seriously. However, journalists and the AG alike were stone walled by the FCC. The FCC refused to co-operate with any attempts to look into this fraudulent activity: https://goo.gl/N7yVB5

A group called Fight for the Future created a website pointing out this fraudulent activity and shining a light directly on it with additional supportive evidence. Guess who sent this group a cease and desist letter and had their corporate lawyers threaten legal action on this group? Yep, Comcast.

Comcast’s new slogan: Comcast, yooouuu didn’t see annnnything.

So Long and thanks for all the Fish.

What will happen now? Well, in short, we just lost the internet. American citizens will pay more for high-speed internet access going forward and likely receive poorer service and stability, given ISPs ability to throttle. Tomorrow’s innovative technologies that provide services we enjoy like today’s Skype, Netflix, Pandora, and more will be killed in infancy. Those that are able to find a way to maturity will either be limited in growth by exorbitant fees or forced into buyouts that will shelve or bury arguably better products and services if they compete with an Oligarchy’s current way of doing business.

The bonus kick-in-the-nuts-while-you’re-already-down is that with net neutrality gone, this will also mean our privacy is up for grabs to the highest bidder. The only protection that American citizens had was under the FCC’s oversight via Net Neutrality. And the only way Pai can kill Net Neutrality is to reclassify ISPs. Currently ISPs are classified as common carriers and are under the protection of the FCC. Booting them from FCC oversights kicks ISPs over to FTC oversight.

Great, the FTC can just protect our privacy and personal information, right? … right? Nope. The FTC will just provide the oversight. As in, “Hi, we see you!” It turns out ISPs that provide mobile or fixed telephone service (which is basically all of them) are completely exempt from FTC enforcement. You read that right. The FTC cannot enforce its laws on any of the ISPs services, at all: https://goo.gl/P7sXkp

This is such a glaring issue that 50 Republican House members wrote Pai in a jointly-signed letter saying, “WTF?!”

Without FTC having any ability to enforce its laws, the ISPs can do whatever they want. Literally. This means whatever ISPs can see you doing online… whatever information they can gather on you – which is basically everything – they can sell that information to anyone they want. To which older people would say, “if you’re not doing anything wrong online, then who cares?” To which I would reply, “Yeah, that’s how it works…”

Best-case scenario, baby boomers, get ready to be spammed and flooded wherever you go online and offline (thanks to the IoT) with Viagra ads and hard-selling of Timeshares in Florida. Oh, and spear-phishing… don’t forget spear-phishing. If you have lots of money – and worked hard your whole life to amass that – the Ides of March are coming. Evil people that do very bad things will have the ability to buy your data in the open market and use it to convince you that they know you, that you need to update account information, and basically unleash a whole new level of con-artistry and scamming… the likes of which you have never seen and the impact of which you cannot imagine.

Worst-case scenario, next time you search for “warning signs for cancer,” “do I drink too much,” and “are dogs tax deductible…” don’t be surprised if your health insurance carrier drops your coverage, your car insurance rates go up, and you receive an audit from the IRS.

Worst-WORST-case scenario? Ask Cambridge Analytica what can be done when your hands on enough people’s personal information. You just may be able to seat a president and, through the butterfly effect, his FCC appointment will undermine the voice and interests of citizens in a previously free country.

Whether you’re a salesman, public speaker, politician, or con man – one of the greatest strengths to connecting with your audience is your ability to read the room. The smaller the room, the easier it is to read and win over.

We, at TimeHoodie, have been doing this for over 20 years and time after time we hear companies say, “If we can just get that first meeting, we have a 50% close rate.” The best salespeople say to us, “If I can just get them on the phone, I almost always can close the sale. This is because they can hear the interest in a person’s voice over the phone; the pauses, the excitement, the interruptions…

This reaction-based sales works to scale in call centers, with constantly optimized phone scripts, it works with video conferencing, and it works, of course, most effectively in person.

Artificial Intelligence is giving us the opportunity to optimize dialogue, creative, and other persuasion elements on the fly.

We have to do this persuasion optimization manually right now, based on clicks, page views, shopping cart additions, etc. The user’s physical interaction with a campaign to demonstrate how far we are getting them down the sales funnel.

For example, we currently run campaigns for a car rental company and we find that if a person comes to their website, looks at a location, shops for price, but then leaves without making a reservation – they are likely shopping based on price and comparing us to other rental car companies. We have been able to optimize our re-marketing campaigns to be highly effective at bringing them back and converting to a sale with little to no price reduction. We use elements already in place related to location, car types, availability, and guarantees to persuade them. Yes, sometimes we do make sure that they are aware of specials that are currently available to them to help them with pricing, but these are not discounts offered specifically to them because they abandoned the website, these are specials already available to everyone, regardless if they have abandoned or not.

We do this persuasion optimization for all of our clients in social media advertising, paid search advertising, basically in ALL advertising and marketing campaigns as well as in website design conversion optimization.

In a mobile-first world, with facial recognition built in for everything from unlocking your phone to payment authorization, there is now an unprecedented level of access to reading a consumer on the fly.

Advertising images can be optimized based on the users reaction to them. Copy can be optimized based on facial reaction. Looking for a smile? Looking for a furrowed brow of concern? Facial recognition feedback allows marketers to know in real-time if they are reaching the emotional connection they are looking for – happiness for impulse buys, concern or fear for emotional buys…

Please understand that this concept is not THAT new. In 2015 Saatchi & Saatchi ran an actual AI test that had outdoor signage that self-optimized based on user feedback tracked via an on-site camera. It was an experiment based on a fake company “Bahio.”

“One interesting aspect of this is the ability to let the system create weird ads no one would otherwise have written, bringing to life ideas that are absurd, and seeing whether by being absurd they are more effective,” he says. “The power of using data in this way is that algorithms can expose things from beyond the human realm of preconceived notions and self-editing.” – David Cox, M&C’s Saatchi Chief Innovation Officer.

Fast Forward to May 2017: Facebook’s Patent Granted for Content Driven by Facial Expressions

By visually tracking a user’s facial expression, Facebook aims to monitor the user’s emotional reactions to different types of content.

Side Note: My favorite part of the patent diagram is the total lack of “give a crap” at the illustration of the person using the phone. I believe this exact illustration was also used for a patent demonstrating the use of bug spray.

What does this mean? Bottom line – Facebook wants to use “passive imaging data” from mobile devices, laptops (anything with a camera pointed at your face) to record your emotions, interpret them, then on-the-fly serve back content to persuade you to buy bug spray. Or vote for a specific candidate. Or… whatever.

Just imagine going to work in your self-driving car with it trying to convince you throughout the entire ride that you really do need to invest in that time share in Florida.

Where do privacy laws factor into all of this? Oh, yeah, you can forget about that, that was sold up the river awhile back. But this isn’t a call to arms, this is more of a, “hey, guess what you can look forward to in future” sort of article.

Speaking of this article, thanks for sticking it out until the end. You’re one of the good ones. Hopefully, it gave you something to ponder while you sip your next latte.
